Thermoplastic Composites 2024: Making a Vital Contribution Towards Circularity and Net-Zero Goals

07 November 2024 - 07 November 2024

Thermoplastic Composites 2024 will address the increasing need for decarbonisation and more circularity in key industries and supply chains.

This in-person event will be held on 7th November at Aston University, Birmingham and features sessions from Robyn Elliott, Technical Lead from the AMRC on weaving unidirectional thermoplastic tapes in composite manufacture and Dr Emma Warren, Technical Fellow, AMRC, giving an introduction to the machining of thermoplastic composites.

Robyn will discuss the benefits of weaving and braiding unidirectional thermoplastic tapes to manufacture composite structures. This technology aims to enhance sustainability by improving recyclability, reducing processing time, and eliminating the need for industrial freezers associated with thermoset composites. By advancing thermoplastic composite capabilities, it supports UK industry in adopting more sustainable and circular material practices, targeting emerging markets.

Dr Emma will discuss how machining thermoplastic composites to meet quality standards efficiently and sustainably can be challenging. While machining processes for thermoset composites are well-researched, those for thermoplastics are less explored. This presentation will introduce the unique challenges and defects encountered in machining thermoplastic composites, aiming to educate and inform the broader research community about effective machining strategies.
