SMEA Lecture: A Brief History of Satellite Navigation

13 March 2018 - 13 March 2018

A Brief History of Satellite Navigation

The annual Ken Barraclough Memorial Lecture will be presented by Air Commodore Norman Bonnor.

At the height of the cold war Norman flew the Victor as part of the V-Force and Bomber Command.  Later he commanded RAF Waddington and went on to become Deputy Commander of the NATO Airborne Early Warning Force.

He will chart the history of Global Satellite Navigation Systems (GNSS) from the earliest days of the ‘Space Race’ in the 1960s and 1970s, navigation satellite systems for positioning of nuclear submarines, to the latest plans for modernisation of existing systems.

On 26 June 2004 the EU and USA signed an agreement on the structure and technical aspects  to allow unrestricted access to  Open services. This  led to the many applications of today and the feasibility of other applications in the future.
