Development of Energy Systems for Electric Road Transport

Professor Richard McMahon - WMG, University of Warwick

Electric vehicles are back on the road, from the iconic Tesla Model S to the rather more prosaic Nissan Leaf.  Electric cars are both clean and a good drive, yet electric cars are no more than 2% of current UK sales.  There are also the hybrid vehicles in production with some manufacturers saying that they will no long make vehicles with only internal combustion engines.  The drive to electric reflects both concerns about air quality and the broader issue of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide.

This talk will look at where the technology of electric vehicles is heading and assess how the market might develop in the face of challenges such as public acceptance, cost, supplying suitable batteries etc.  Will the present car manufacturers be able to adapt?

Not least in importance is the need to provide charging infrastructure, and supply the electric power, topics about which there has recently been some excitable speculation!

The event is to be held at the Holiday Inn, Royal Victoria – Sheffield
