AEROSPACE INNOVATIONS ATTRACT GLOBAL AUDIENCE TO YORKSHIRE

Date: 30/09/2009

Over 250 representatives from the global aerospace industry met at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in South Yorkshire to discuss the latest innovations being introduced to get maximum performance for minimum cost.

The Trends in Aerospace Manufacturing (TRAM09) Conference, organised by the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing and sponsored by the AMP and Yorkshire Forward, attracted speakers from some of the world’s leading research organisations and manufacturers.

Test pilot Ricardo Traveno, of Boeing, gave first-hand insights into flying the F18 Super Hornet. He stressed the importance of maintenance and servicing issues being considered in the design and manufacture of aircraft components.

The international delegates also got an overview of trends in machine-tool design by Dr Masahiko Mori, president of Mori Seiki.

Technical presentations included papers from representatives of AMP tenants the AMRC and TWI Technology Centre (Yorkshire), plus Boeing, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Messier-Dowty, EADS, and leading universities.

“In addition to the inward investment these events bring through hospitality, they also offer outstanding business opportunities to Sheffield and the region,” says commercial director of the AMRC, Adrian Allen.

The senior business development manager of South Yorkshire’s Advanced Manufacturing and Metals (AMM) team, Joe Anwyl, said: “The success of events such as this contributes to the AMP’s international reputation as the prime location for innovation, research and manufacturing excellence in the UK.”

After this year’s event at the AMP in Rotherham, next year’s conference will be held in Chicago.

The Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) is a 100-acre site on the Rotherham-Sheffield border in South Yorkshire. It is a joint venture between public and private sector organisations including Yorkshire Forward and UK Coal (owner of the land) whose aim is to create an internationally recognised centre for engineering, innovation, research and manufacturing excellence.

The AMP provides manufacturers, of all sizes and sectors, with the ability to take advantage of advanced technologies and new market opportunities so they are better able to create local jobs and export the best of the region’s manufacturing design, technology, skills and innovation around the world.

In addition, a wide range of property options provides growing companies with the opportunity to locate their operation at the region’s recognised centre of excellence for advanced manufacturing, and benefit from their proximity to industry innovators and international brands.
