2010-01-14 Yorkshire centre will lead business to a low carbon future

A new £50 million UK-based research centre which will help show businesses how to react to carbon change was officially launched in London today (14 January 2009).

The Centre for Low Carbon Futures (CLCF) is a joint initiative of Yorkshire Forward and the region’s universities, and will work to develop clean technologies and help in the reduction of carbon emissions. The Centre will draw on the expertise of the world class researchers in the region as a focal point for understanding and demonstrating how business can evolve and adapt in a low-carbon world. 

The Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward has contributed £5.7m to the Centre, which is led by the Universities of Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York and draws on the strengths of all the region’s education institutions. It is developing an innovative way of translating research into business applications, adding value to regional and national economic development and will help in meeting regional targets to reduce Green House Gas emissions. Rotherham Council needed to demonstrate that its regeneration arm RIDO helped new and exisiting busineses arrive, survive and succeed.  The status was awarded by the National Business Incubation Association based in America.  Read the full story here.

2009-12-16 Boeing 787 Dreamliner Completes First Flight

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner took to the sky for the first time on December 15, 2009 ushering a new era in air travel as it departed before an estimated crowd of more than 12,000 employees and guests from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. The flight marks the beginning of a flight test program that will see six airplanes flying nearly around the clock and around the globe, with the airplane's first delivery scheduled for fourth quarter 2010.  Read the full Boeing press release here.

2009-12-03 Lord Mandelson announces £25 million Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has announced a £25 million Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) to be based at the University of Sheffield. Led by the University and Rolls Royce, the NAMRC will focus on the manufacturing of the next generation of nuclear power stations.
