RAeS Lecture: Brough aviation excellence since 1916

31 October 2017 - 31 October 2017

Brough aviation excellence since 1916
Guest speakers: John Newton and Steve Blue
Engineering Manager and Chief Airworthiness Engineer, BAE Systems

Robert Blackburn moved his aircraft design and manufacturing business from Leeds in
1916 and since that date there has been continuous aircraft production at the Brough
site. A total of 37 different types of aircraft have been produced at the site during this
period which at its peak had a workforce of circa 6000 people. The presentation aims to
take people through the history of Brough looking at a selection of the many and varied
aircraft types (including some archive footage) produced here and how the site has
changed over the last 100 years.

John and Steve both joined the newly formed British Aerospace on 1 August 1978
having graduated from Manchester and Salford Universities respectively. John started in
the Aerodynamics Department before moving into Flight Test, Mission Systems and In-
Service Engineering. He is currently Programme Engineering Manager Hawk Acquisition
and Upgrades. Steve started in the Stress Office, a short attachment to New Business
support, back to Structures, Structural Test then Airworthiness. Steve is currently Chief
Airworthiness Engineer for Brough.
